Unlock Your Original Meta Quest

A new bootloader gives developers and enthusiasts complete control over the hardware of the original Meta Quest, freeing it from dependence on Meta servers and applications.

What Does This Mean?

The QuestStack project has integrated known vulnerabilities in the Android fastboot process of the Quest to create a privilege escalation chain that leads to full root access on the device. This means owners of the original Quest can now sideload applications without needing to register for a Meta developer account and activate developer mode through the Meta mobile app.

Features and Ongoing Projects

  • Enable the 90Hz refresh rate, which was previously capped at 72Hz for performance reasons.
  • Allow other VR controllers to function with the original Quest.

The author of the QuestStack project, starseed12345, speculates that a similar exploit could grant root access on Quest 2 headsets running older firmware versions, but currently the risk of damaging the device outweighs the benefits of unlocking the bootloader.
